HAWASS CALLS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF COPTOLOGY DEPARTMENTS AT UNIVERSITIES
|
|
Translated for CAA from the original article by Dina Abdel Aleem
Dr. Zawhi Hawass, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says that special attention should be given to the establishment of departments of Coptic culture and heritage at universities with Departments of Archeology and at Fine Arts schools. In addition, Dr. Hawass said there should be a special section for the study of Coptic monuments at the College of Archeology, similar to those devoted to Islamic and Ancient Egyptian art.
Also, in a statement made to the newspaper Youm7, Hawass said that it has become imperative to recognize the importance of Coptic culture in Egypt. This has become a necessity since there is a lack of specialists in this field, including those who work at the Coptic Museum in Egypt but do not have the required expertise. He affirmed that taking care of Jewish and Coptic monuments is part of the master plan of the Supreme Council and that their remains should be treated the same way as the Islamic and Pharaonic ones.
Dr. Gawdat Gabra, Professor of Coptic Studies at Claremont University in California who has urged the establishment of Coptic departments at Egyptian Universities side by side with Islamic, Roman, Byzantine and Greek asked, "Why is it that there are a diversity of academic institutions around the world as far apart as Germany and Australia that study Coptic history and culture, and yet there are no similar institutions in Egypt, which is the source and origin of that culture?" It is important that Copts be given their due by the study of their history, their heritage and their civilization.

Dr. Zahi Hawaas;
It takes a very good courage to admit what should be done ( HUNDREDS YEAR AGO ). It was THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. No one wants to see. It has been thought that if we do not acknowledge the ( COPTIC ) era it will go away. Well it did not go away, and THE WORLD SEES IT . Thanks Dr. Hawaas for your courage. Better late than NEVER.

I am at a loss for words. I salute Dr. Hawaas' call for studying Coptology in Egyptian Higher Institutions of learning. No knowledgeable person would deny the deliberate masking and destruction of Coptic relics and total excising of Egypt's Coptic history between 41 AD (ADE) and the advent of the Islamic Arabs in the seventh century AD (ADE.) If Dr. Hawaas is politically influential to the extent that he sees his proposal materialize, then he will have written his name indelibly in history. The link between the true Pharaonic Egypt through Demotic Coptic Egypt to Islamic Egypt is extraordinarily rich in philosophy, contribution by the Sea of Alexandria in the formation and growth of the Christian faith in Europe and Asia. This is a major achievement with a proud history. While the Ancient Egyptian demotic language is considered a dead language, its flickering flame has been maintained bright in the ecclesiastical Coptic domain. As Latin is a dead language only in use in the Vatican, so is the Coptic language, which is being resurrected in many Coptic churches overseas and in Departments of Coptic studies in many Western universities. Good luck Dr. Hawaas and may Allah bless you. Saba E. Demian, M.D.
